In an effort to soften the streetscape and offer shade to pedestrians, this 3 part project will add artwork, plantings and a small shade structure to an East Austin corner serving 2 public bus routes. Funded by East Austin Rotary through a grant from Keep Austin Beautiful, large steel planters filled with tough, low-maintenance, native plants and new street benches are a first step in cleaning up an important but neglected corner. To create the planters, a decommissioned agricultural tank was salvaged and reused in cylindrical sections which are scaled to accommodate the root systems of street trees and visually anchor the corner.
